keeps unwanted programs
There are some Windows programs that you can't uninstall, no matter how hard you try. But you can keep yourself from launching them accidentally. There are a number of ways to do this, but one of the easiest is to run Application Locker, a free utility that lets you "lock" users out of certain apps. When you launch Application Locker the first time you'll see a list of commonly blocked programs including some that you might not even have installed on your system. You can configure the list by removing these items or by adding any executable file on your system. You don't need to add the complete file path, just the name of the executable. For instance, you can lock Internet Explorer by adding "iexplore.exe" to the block list. You can also use Application Locker to prevent your kids from opening the web browser, or as a reminder to yourself to keep your IM client closed during working hours. Of course, anyone can reenable blocked applications simply by running the program and unblocking them. So I wouldn't advise using Application Locker as a security tool, but rather as a utility to make it a bit tougher to accidentally fire up the wrong program.[via gHacks]

One very obscure song
The movie Vanishing Point is one of my favorites though most likely not everyone's cup of tea. At roughly ten minutes into the movie a song places at Kowalski drives his Challenger into a the parking lot of a biker bar. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what that song is. It's not on the soundtrack. As far as I'm able to tell it's not listed in the end credits as a song played. Midomi can't even figure out what or who it is. Worse still the only lyrics that can be heard clearly come up with just one hit on Google - and that hit is someone trying to figure out the song name!Mystery lyrics: "Oh, Lord, won't you help me to find myself a place to pray?"Singer? No idea. Male singer with a few background singers. I have a sneaking suspicion that Delaney, Bonnie and Friends preformed the song but the name and whereabouts today remain totally unknown.Any ideas? On a related note I think the drive in my Apple TV is going. I'm going to have to look up how it may be possible to break into the device and replace the HD with a solid state drive, if that is even possible. Or I may have to replace the Apple TV with a Mac mini with a solid state drive but I don't really want to do that (though it would combine the DVD player and Apple TV functions into one device - that is a plus).

Happy 100th
The KMT hosted a love-in for the memory of formerPresident Chiang Ching-kuo, son of Chiang Kai-shek... the Taipei Times reported: Although they were sitting just an aisle away, former president Lee Teng-hui and People First Party Chairman James Soong were worlds apart as they attended an event at the Presidential Office in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of former president Chiang Ching-kuo . TV footage showed Lee being welcomed by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung at the auditorium before being escorted to his seat next to President Ma Ying-jeou . Many guests came over to greet Lee and shook hands. The Taipei Times report, which discussed what was said and who was there, unfortunately missed all the fun stuff, but Taiwan News, as usual, put the saccharine falseness of the event into perspective with a hard-hitting editorial that not only identified everything that was missing, but also pointed out that this is just another chapter in the ongoing KMT internal saga of "Where does the Chiang charisma reside?":The taxpayer financed commemorations for the late KMT leader have included a mountain of "pulp panegyrics" and exhibitions, a music concert, a website (www.cck.org.tw) and an official memorial service topped off by a 11,000 Chinese character essay by President Ma Ying-jeou, who is transparently positioning himself as his mentor's political successor. In his address posted on Friday, Ma lauded the younger Chiang for launching the so-called "10 Major Construction Projects" in the early 1970s, improving the livelihood of the Taiwan people and creating an economic miracle" and "guiding democratic reform and lifting the freeze in cross-strait relations" with the People's Republic of China which is ruled by the Chinese Communist Party, which expelled Chiang Kai-shek's KMT regime from the China mainland in 1949.Ironically, Ma's keynote account is more noteworthy for what it omits than for what it includes. For example, readers will look in vain for any mention of the younger Chiang's role as the mastermind of the KMT martial law regime's security network in the 1950s and 1960s and his role as the hands-on executor of the "White Terror" purge of alleged "communists," Taiwan independence advocates, liberal dissidents and rivals for power that cost the lives of at least 5,000 mainlanders nd native Taiwanese, nearly 30,000 imprisoned political prisoners and the destruction of tens of thousands of families.Readers will not see any mention of the massive "externalized" social, environmental, cultural and political costs of Chiang's touted "economic miracle" or the ever-present institutional corruption of the KMT party-state which later surfaced in its possession of over NT$200 billion in "ill-gotten" party assets.Readers will also find no mention of the decades of struggle by Taiwan citizens for democracy and human rights and the suppression of the 1970s "Tangwai" democratic movement in the wake of the Dec. 10, 1979 "Kaohsiung Incident" engineered by the KMT secret police.Readers will also hunt in vain for any mention of the Sept. 28, 1986 founding of the Democratic Progressive Party in defiance of martial law and this event's decisive impact on Chiang's correct decision to revoke the useless 38-year-old martial law decree on July 15, 1987.The younger Chiang ran Daddy's security state during the martial law era. Later he brought Taiwanese into the KMT, but that was at least in part an attempt to establish a political base independent of the mainlander top crust that had supported Chiang Kai-shek. A notorious womanizer, he is also far more warmly remembered in Taiwan than his dictator father, and often gets the credit for the technology-based industrialization of the 1980s.Ma, as the Taiwan News noted, was transparently positioning himself as the recipient of the Chiang charisma. In the quasi-religious KMT with its Return to Zion theology, this is important -- as I noted several years ago in a long post on charisma and the KMT that is still one of my favorites. I think this quote of New Testament scholar Robert Price is still quite apropo:"Sometimes the death of the founder of a religious community eventuates in a succession dispute: who has the right to succeed him as pontiff of the faithful? The successor may be entitled to the same degree of authority the founder had, or it may be a delegated, lesser authority, that of a vicar or caretaker. In either case, it is not unusual for conflict to emerge between partisans of the founder's relatives on the one hand, and of his disciples on the other. It is one of the messiest aspects of what Max Weber has called "the routinization of charisma," whereby the followers of a charismatic founder have to do the best they can to hold things together after the death of the leader. He was a tough act to follow, and no one can quite fill his shoes, so no one particular effort to claim to do so passes unchallenged.[1]"The Chiang legacy is a tough act to follow, but it appears that Ma will win almost by default -- Lee Teng-hui, Chiang Ching-kuo's vice president, is no longer in the KMT, while James Soong, who often positioned himself as a follower of Chiang Ching-kuo, also split off from the KMT and is now only a political shadow of his former looming self. Legislator John Chiang, the illegitimate son of the former President, is not a major player. From my perspective the oddity of all this ceremony is that while it appears to be of supreme importance to individuals within the KMT as they jockey for position within the Party, the public does not appear particularly affected by it. In other words, voters appear to be more willing to treat the KMT as just another political party than the KMT itself is -- an important factor in its electoral success!

Is money the number one thing ?
I'm spent
Well...I am finished with Harry. All of him. (4,100 pages in 30 days=137 pages a day) Although to be honest, most days I read 300-400 pages and there were many days I didn't read at all.. My husband is a bit disgusted with how fast I read but once you start you cannot stop. So I didn't. It was good while it lasted...but nothing can last forever.I have been busy besides Harry, of course. There has been knitting:I have one sleeve completed and am started on the other on my Fitted V-Neck Sweater from Fitted Knits. This Cascade Pastaza yarn is really lovely to work with. I will use it again, I am sure. I have also started school clothes shopping. For me--not the boys, lest you get confused. I started with shoes.Aren't the socks a lovely addition? I am breaking them in around the house. I wore them last night out to dinner with my good friend Colleen, and they hurt, so today...socks it is. These are supposedly very hot this season, a buckled ballet flat. So, look at me...I am hip. Also hot his Fall? Peep-toe pumps or slingbacks. I've seen a lot of these worn with opaque black tights and plaid skirts. Love them. They are actually comfortable. I may have to wear them with socks around the house just a bit to break in the toe area...but they are so cute. I love them. My dormant shoe fetish is re-emerging I am afraid. I also bought a black pencil skirt (and am going back for one in grey, as grey is very hip as well this season), a white blouse with puffy sleeves, a black trench coat, and a couple of other shirts. Working on bringing some classy professional looks to my usually casual work attire. My high-maintenance hair cut experience will take place on August 28. Stay tuned.Next up in knitting? The Pea Pod Baby Set for Michelle knit in Knit Picks Swish DK in Moss and then this:The Cobblestone Pullover from the Fall edition of Interweave Knits, in Wool of the Andes in the Arctic Pool color for Alan. He says I never make him anything...and he is right. Well, I did make him a scarf in the early months of knitting that is really more of an ascot...way too short. So, I owe him one...and he is paying for my hair extravaganza, so...

Choices
When I was 16, I hit one of those proverbial crossroads of life. Not only was I in a position where one decision was going to change the rest of my life, but I knew this to be the case. I had only recently resumed visits with my aunt (the one who cared for me for a year after my mom went into a care facility & who ended up placing me in foster care) & her family, when they offered that I could move back in with them. I turned it down, but began to think and write about it in the form of letters to express my feelings. I did not send any of these letters, in fact, I tore them up because I decided I was better off staying with that foster family for the time being. I forgot about the letters completely.Just before the start of winter break, my foster mom sent for me to come home early from school. When I arrived, I was confronted with the letters, which I explained fully & honestly for what they were. Her two daughters, who were in their twenties & living in the home rent-free decided their feelings were still hurt. I was told to call my aunt & I better hope that she would be able to come get me or I would be out on the street at 5 pm. They took back everything they had given me, including my winter coat & other items paid for by the state's clothing allowance.I stayed with my aunt's family through the break, but was forced to "reunify" with the foster family. In a horrible confrontation with my foster mom & her oldest daughter during a therapy session with a counselor I did not know, I was expected to grovel & beg to be part of their family again, which was not something I wanted. I was put back into their home, where I was treated like a felon for a while & expected to return love for this treatment. My aunt's attitude toward me started to change once I was moved back into the foster home. She started talking badly about me behind my back, which I found out from other members of the family. She started treating me like she did not trust me. She acted as though any concerns I might have about moving back home were personal attacks on her. It became impossible to carry on a relationship with her.By now, I had gotten a part-time job & started working on the weekends. I did not have as much time to visit my aunt & uncle but still wanted to move to their house at the end of the school year. My aunt did not believe me & argued with me to the point that I decided I could not handle living with her.It was then that I made a life changing choice. Instead of moving back with my aunt's family, I decided to stay in care. Though the home I was in was not good, it was my first chance to attend one school for more than two years. While I didn't feel loved, I felt stable, which I didn't feel on visits to my aunt. I felt that if my aunt really loved me, she would want me to be happy & she would stick by my decision. I was wrong. She bailed on me & I have not heard from her except when I called to try to get information about my great-grandmother's funeral. She more or less told me that she would send someone to pick me up & if they found me, great. If not, that was just tough, but she would not take directions to my house. Other than that, we've had no contact in eight years.

Soul of the age
You can learn a lot about Shakespeare by studying the world he inhabitedIN HIS 1997 book, The Genius of Shakespeare, Jonathan Bate wrote about the man whom Ben Jonson, a rival playwright, poet and actor, described as not of the age, but for all time. In his new book, which is being published in America this month (it came out in Britain in October), Mr Bate explores a different Shakespeare, one Jonson described as Soul of the Age!, the man who stood for and expressed the essence of his generation. The effect, curiously, is not to distance the man, but to sharpen him. Approaching him locally, with connections to specific places and people, with certain books on his desk, and an eye out for particular political and diplomatic pitfallsall this brings Shakespeare into focus. Not that any biographer has much hard fact to work on. As Mr Bate says, Shakespeare is elusive in every way: in his politics, religion, sexuality and in everything else that matters. The trick, it seems, is to pay very close attention to what evidence there is, not to take anything for granted and, well, to know a great deal about his world. ...

Hottest Soap Hunk
Here at my annual Comics Competition, I have been rather unfair to the distaff side and not featured hot guys as a distinct category before. In fairness, the comics pages don't give me much help here. Most comic dudes tend to be Dopey Dads or Alarming Alcoholics. Let's remedy that by featuring some the ruggedly handsome men you can check out over the breakfast table every morning.Randy ParkerJudge ParkerWhile not THE Judge Parker, this newly minted magistrate is known for his lantern jaw and his many adventures with the fairer sex but he never seems to quite close the deal. He knows how to work it like a claw which would be smuttier if there were any hope of him getting to second base. While he often takes the backseat to longtime partner Sam Driver, this barrister is a versatile player.Sam DriverJudge ParkerThis strip is blessed with not one, but two handsome brunettes. So handsome that they are almost indistinguishable. Sam is the more adventurous one whose primary activity is avoiding sex with his incredibly hot wife so he can solve mysteries with other preternaturally attractive women and not have sex with them either.Rex Morgan, MDWhen it comes to not having sex with his wife, nobody tops Rex Morgan who stretches the bounds of ambiguously closetedness even by comic soap standards. His true proclivities are less of a subtextual theme than a running joke that everybody except June seems to be in on. I've never quite figured out what Rex actually DOES other than pose provocatively and come-on to cabin boys. Not that there's anything wrong with that.Mark TrailSoap strips tend to eponymous, but not more so than Mark Trail, forest ranger, nature writer, and backwoods vigilante. No hirsute evil doer is safe from his Right Fist of Justice®. He also manages to tease two women with his arboreal cluelessness; his long suffering wife Cherry and indefatigable outdoorsy fag-hag Kelly Welly. While no side of this triangle has ever been consummated, there is still hope for a Cherry-Kelly hot-springs party someday. The PhantomThe Ghost Who Walks In Purple Spandex wins the token superhero slot mostly because he doesn't shoot white fluids out of his body as a superpower. Just what is his superpower anyways? Other than an uncanny ability to be a fashion disaster in any age, he mostly just shoots and punches his enemies and drugs his friends/victims. His fondness for cheek-clenching fabrics makes him the most fan-servicey of the nominees. Since he frequently cavorts lasciviously with PhantomSpouse Diane, he is the most arguably heterosexual hunk in this field despite his fondness for young boys in diapers. This category is tough call. All the guys are hot, but they each seem to come with some baggage. While their true proclivities stay family-friendly perhaps they can inspire some truly lurid slash fiction. Let the best man win.You must enable JavaScript to vote in this poll from Pollverize.

Morales Wins
Morales Wins Bolivia Election Law With Hunger Strike
Bolivian President Evo Morales ended a five-day hunger strike today after Congress approved a new electoral law that will boost the voting power of his core constituency. Morales had canceled a diplomatic visit to Cuba to maintain a vigil inside the presidential palace, where for almost a week he consumed only water and coca leaves, the raw ingredient in cocaine and a folk remedy used in Bolivia to suppress hunger. He slept on a bare mattress on the palace floor, surrounded by fasting union leaders who form part of his coalition party. “The Bolivian people will never forget this revolutionary process,” Morales, 49, said today in the presidential palace, moments after concluding the strike. In remarks on state television, Morales said he hoped the fast would strengthen Bolivians’ support for “profound economic, social and cultural changes.” The new bill guarantees increased representation in Congress for Bolivia’s indigenous communities, who broadly support Morales, an Aymara Indian and a close ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Opposition lawmakers argued that the measure would give Morales’s Movement Toward Socialism party, known as MAS, an advantage in both chambers. The bill, blocked in the opposition-controlled Senate, passed after Morales agreed to reduce the number of proposed indigenous voting districts to 7 from 14. Hunger Strikes Morales, a former protest leader and head of the coca growers association, said he once refused to eat for 18 days while locked in a Bolivian prison, according to an interview published April 11 in the state-run newspaper Cambio. This was his 18th hunger strike, he said in the interview. Members of the opposition Democratic Power party, known as Podemos, stormed out of a session of Congress on April 9, demanding further changes and additions to the bill, including plans to create a new voter registry to prevent fraud. The lawmakers returned to the chamber on April 12 after Morales consented to the new voter registry, which will include photographs, signatures and fingerprints for all potential voters, in remarks broadcast the previous day. “We consider it wise of the president to recognize the new registry,” Senate President and Podemos member Oscar Ortiz said at a news conference at the Congress building on April 12. “It’s a measure that is going to strengthen Bolivia’s democracy.” Abandoned Airplane The ruling party had argued that the government didn’t have the resources to implement the new registry in time for the December elections. Morales, who has traveled abroad more than any other Bolivian president, said he would abandon plans to buy a new presidential airplane in order to pay for the registry. The Bolivian leader currently travels in a 30-year-old aircraft, Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera said April 12 at a news conference at the Congress building. “Morales is operating under a completely different definition of democracy, a majoritarian view that says, ‘I have 50 percent of voters behind me, so I get what I want,” said Miguel Centellas, a Latin American Political Science professor at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Morales took 53.7 percent of the vote in 2005 elections, becoming Bolivia’s first president to win a majority. He plans to run for a second-five year term in elections now guaranteed, according to the law, to be held this year on Dec. 6. About 40 percent of Bolivians say they would vote for Morales in the elections, according to a February poll by independent La Paz-based pollster Ipsos Apoyo. Former President Carlos Mesa, who emerged in late 2008 to oppose the new Morales- backed constitution, was the closest challenger with about 8 percent support. The survey has margin of error of 2.1 percentage points.

Healthy Fast Food - Good Choices Gone Bad
Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Diet and Weight Loss Fast food restaurants have long been criticized for their fatty, salty menu options -- greasy burgers, salty fries and gigantic sodas. So they've started adding choices for the health conscious, like salads, baked potatoes and yogurt. But it seems when healthy choices are on the menu, people might actually let down their guards and go big -- choosing the least healthy option instead of the salad.Three small studies turned up this conclusion, and it's an intriguing finding. Study author Keith Wilcox attributes it to the "licensing effect." You know how sometimes after a long run, you think to yourself, "Well, I can indulge at dinner tonight, I worked out." The same appears to happen in the brain when salad or other healthy choices show up on a fast food menu. "People give themselves license to eat more indulgently because there is a healthy option," Wilcox tells That's Fit. Ramblin' Wreck All Day Long
Back in October we went down to Atlanta for Parent's Weekend at Georgia Tech. As you might recall from this post or this one, my son is in the marching band. Game days are busy for the band and for this game my son also drew roaming band duty which meant he had even more performances than usual. I decided that I would spend the morning shadowing him and see what a game day involved. For a noon kick-off, the players all enter the stadium at about 10 am with a big parade that includes the Ramblin' Wreck, the cheerleaders, and the band. As soon as all the players are in the locker room, the band breaks up and the two roaming bands go marching around campus hitting all the frat parties and tailgate areas and alumni events. As I followed him around, the stopped to play about a half dozen times. The would usually do the official school fight song and then the Ramblin' Wreck Song, one of the most distinctive college songs ever played. Another signature GT Band song is the old Budweiser theme song (not in my montage, but you can see it here). When the two roaming bands met up, they played a round of Dueling Buds before heading off to reform the entire band. That's when I took off for the parent's picnic and catch up with my wife. While I was eating, the band continues to march towards the stadiums stopping at three or four more places. I missed it, but here is yet another YouTuber with great video of the final stop before entering the stadium. And then at the game, they play Ramblin' Wreck after each score and at the end of the game. By the time the final whistle blows at about 3 pm, the band has been playing straight for nearly five hours. Watch the video again (and I highly recommend clicking through for the hi-def version) and check the time hacks. For the longest time I didn't quite know what to do with the footage I had shot. I had nearly a half hour of raw film (if digital video files can be called film) that had at least a dozen snippets of various pieces. Finally I decided to edit it down to a montage of the various Ramblin' Wreck pieces. Besides, this gave me a chance to test out the ease of use of the new iMovie '09 which is supposed to make movie making as painless as possible. It took me a while to get used to the paradigm, but I kept trimming it down until I got it under four minutes. I even got the lyrics to crawl under one of the shots of all three verses. Now you can all sing along.A fair amount of stuff ended up on the cutting room floor because hi-def is rather unforgiving of camera shake. But as I have conclusive proven with visual evidence that if I had a son, sir, he'd yell 'TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!' like his daddy used to do.
